Four beauty products you can DIY at home

Ever flipped one of your products around to read the ingredients and realized you have absolutely no idea what any of it means? Yeah, same.  While there are a lot of amazing products out there (many of which we'd never attempt to DIY) there are a few staples that you can easily make at home with natural ingredients.  The benefits of making your own products include producing less waste, spending less money, and more! Keep reading for some of our favourite recipes pulled from only the best sources.

#1 lip scrub via Poosh

Lip scrub is one of the more expensive items to purchase for what you get but is among one of the simplest to make at home.  Here's what you need:

  • 1 tbsp of manuka honey
  • 1 tbsp of room temperature coconut oil
  • 1 tsp of sugar-in-the-raw

Mix the ingredients and seal in a reusable container.  Apply as needed to the lips in a circular motion and remove with a reusable cotton pad.  Store in a cool, dry place for up to two weeks.

#2 hair mask via The Every Girl

Using some of the same ingredients from the lip scrub above, you can make a super nourishing hair mask.  Here's what you need:

  • 1 tbsp of manuka honey
  • 1 tbsp of room temperature coconut oil

Heat the ingredients in a glass bowl positioned above a simmering pot of water.  The mask works best when applied to wet hair and where the damage is, which is typically your ends.  Tie your hair up in a bun and allow the mask to set for 30-40 minutes, then rinse out using your regular shampoo and conditioner routine.  The proportions above are enough for a one-time use, so you'll need to make it as needed.

#3 clay mask via Refinery29

We love a good sheet mask, but it can be super wasteful and expensive! As an alternative, we love this chocolate-rose clay mask.  Here's what you need:

  • 2 oz cocoa powder
  • 2 oz bentonite clay
  • 20 drops rose essential oil

Combine these ingredients and seal in a reusable container in a cool, dry place for up to six months.  When you're ready for your mask, mix 1 tsp of the mixture to 1 tbsp of one of the following: aloe gel (soothing), yogurt (exfoliating), honey (moisturizing) or water (easiest) and apply to damp skin.

#4 scented body lotion via The Wellness Mama

If you're like us and you get overwhelmed by the endless choices available in any body care aisle, you'll appreciate this recipe for homemade lotion.  Here's what you need:

  • 0.5 cups almond oil
  • 0.25 cups room temperature coconut oil
  • 0.25 cups beeswax
  • Optional ingredients: 1 tsp of vitamin E (skin repair), 2 tsp cocoa butter (thickener), or a few drops of essential oils/vanilla (scent).

Heat all of the ingredients except the vitamin E and/or essential oils/vanilla (if using) in a glass bowl positioned above simmering water.  Stir until melted then add any vitamin E and/or essential oils/vanilla you're using.  Seal in a reusable container in a cool, dry place for up to six months and apply as needed
